Musical Fence: Maestro Lucio D. San Pedro

Picture
I made a survey and asked a couple of friends. The question was “Do you know any lullaby song except the foreign ones?” Some answered no; a few responded the song of Lucio San Pedro but most of them warbled the oyayi that he composed.

At the end of the Poblacion Itaas Street, I gazed upon the decorated wall; unexpectedly I sang the lullaby as I read the lyrics. Suddenly, I remembered my mom humming with a tune.

“Sa Ugoy ng Duyan” (On the Swaying of the Hammock) was written by Maestro Lucio D. San Pedro and orchestrated by Levi Celerio.

The whole fence was inscribed with notes and lyrics that were engraved and painted with bright colours. The musical notes were made out of metal and was shaped in detail. Its length was one block (that means a whole side of a lot) and it was created by Angono’s resident muralist Charlie Anorico in memory of the National Artist in Music.

The local lullaby was sung or hummed by every mother while patting her child to put to sleep. Nonetheless, it has been a part of the Filipino culture that was hand down from generation to generation.

Moreover, it was revived by well-known singers particularly Lea Salonga, Aiza Siguera and Regine Velasquez. Also, a group of individuals called Jeremiah re-arranged the composition to uplift their creativity in music through the use of harmony of their voices.

Through the years, Sa Ugoy ng Duyan remained an OPM (Original Pilipino Music) Song that shows our patriotism by which we cultivate our culture and heritage. Indeed, even through music we can track our past and take it as an advantage that will empower us to continue their legacy and be known as a world-class country for music and arts.

Sa Ugoy ng Duyan

Lucio D. San Pedro

Oh! inay
